Google Cloud SQL for MySQL is a basic managed MySQL database. A single “failover replica” can be created for failover, although this failover replica cannot be used for reads. Adding a failover replica will double the cost. Read replicas can be deployed as well, with each increasing the cost of the deployment linearly. Synchronous replication does add overhead for write intensive workloads. A DR node can be deployed in a separate Google Cloud region, though promoting this remote node will break the cluster, leaving the newly promoted node as a cluster of one.
